Know the difference between L1, L2 and L3 Switches
As a System & Network Administrator, working across different layers of the OSI model is part of daily operations.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
L1 (Physical Layer):
Basic switching with no MAC address awareness. Think of media converters or hubs.
L2 (Data Link Layer):
Understands MAC addresses, supports VLANs, Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), and basic switching functions.
L3 (Network Layer):
Capable of routing between VLANs, understands IP addressing, and supports static/dynamic routing.
Understanding these layers is key to designing efficient and scalable networks.
