Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a standard protocol used for monitoring and managing network devices across IP-based networks.
It facilitates communication and control between a central management system and networked devices such as routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, servers, CCTV cameras, recorders, and wireless access points. SNMP helps administrators detect and troubleshoot network issues, monitor performance, and ensure the health and availability of network infrastructure.
Key Components:
SNMP Manager:
• The central system (often a server) responsible for sending requests and receiving data from devices on the network.
• It monitors and manages all SNMP-enabled devices.
SNMP Agent:
• Software components running on each managed device (like routers, switches, CCTV cameras).
• Agents collect and store data about the device’s performance and status.
• This data is structured using a MIB (Management Information Base).
• MIB (Management Information Base): A database of information that defines what can be managed on a device.
• Each device has its own MIB, which includes details like CPU load, memory usage, interface status, etc.
