Stop over-engineering your sensor stack. Start optimizing it.

In the race for fully autonomous vehicles, there is a tendency to mistake “more sensors” for “better safety.”
However, a new framework on sensor selection (Maktedar et al., 2024) suggests a more systematic approach. The key is mapping the sensor to the specific object type you need to detect:
✅ Use Radar for longitudinal distance speed tracking.
✅ Use Cameras for classification (Vehicle vs. Motorcycle vs. Guardrail).
✅ Use LiDAR for precise environmental modeling—but have a backup plan for bad weather.
The paper argues that the real magic happens not in the hardware, but in the specific Fusion Strategy: balancing Dynamic Fusion, Static Fusion, and Road Modeling to cover the blind spots of each device.
