Wireless Technologies for Sensor/Edge Connectivity
With the rising need to collect data
Wireless is critical to many systems
But, with so many options, which should you choose🤔
Let’s start with this: There is no One Size Fits All for Wireless.
Different products and technologies will work best depending on the application, power source, required update rate, and needed range.
So, how do you sort through this all?
Don’t start with the technology… start with what you are trying to do. Let the requirements of the application guide your technology decision.
* What is the distance between sensors that need to be connected?
* What is the overall footprint/span that needs to be covered?
* Is there power available?
* What is the required update rate? (Not what you want, what is required)
* Are there existing networks that can be leveraged/ must be avoided?
Other things to consider would be industry-specific requirements, security, and if public networks are an option.
I can not take credit for this graphic… it was developed by GARRETT SCHMIDT. I believe it is an excellent infographic on some of the technology options available and their key differences. It is far from an exhaustive list, but a very good overview.
