What is DHCP?
What is DHCP?
DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. It is a network management protocol used to automatically assign IP addresses and other communication parameters to devices on a network, allowing them to communicate effectively.
✅ Key Functions of DHCP:
✅Automatic IP Address Assignment:
(A)DHCP dynamically assigns an IP address to each device (client) on the network.
(B)This prevents IP conflicts and manual configuration.
✅Lease Time:
(1) IP addresses are assigned for a specific period, called a “lease”. After the lease expires, the IP can be reassigned.
✅Other Configuration Details:
(1) DHCP also provides other important network information such as:
(1.1)Subnet mask
(1.2)Default gateway
(1.3)DNS server addresses
✅ How DHCP Works (Process):
DHCP Discover:
Client sends a broadcast message to locate a DHCP server.
DHCP Offer:
DHCP server responds with an offer of an IP address.
DHCP Request:
Client requests to accept the offered IP address.
DHCP Acknowledgment (ACK):
DHCP server confirms and assigns the IP address to the client.
