SFPs in Optical Networks
SFPs in Optical Networks
1- as we know the SFP is a module used to convert electrical to optical and vice versa
2- thats could be done by using laser and photo diode
3- SFP consisting of some other parts like EEPROM to store the serial number and vendor information and technical specifications of the module
4- also it may contain small amplifier and digital signal processing unit
5- SFP : small form factor pluggable
6- There are multiple classifications for SFP , we have Electeical SFP and Optical SFP
7- we have also Single mode and multi mode
8- there is also fixed wavelength and Tunable wavelength SFPs
9- based on the datarates we have wide range of SFPs like SFPs+ , XFP , QSFP , CFP ,…
10- SFPs used to connect routers , switches , WDM , FTTH , LTE and 5G BBUs , …
11- fixed SFPs are specific types of modules works in single channel/ wavelength however Tunable SFPs could have range of wavelengths
12- Tunable SFPs are dynamic and flexible and widely usein DWDM networks because we could easily change and control the wavelength through the NMS configuration
13- from the wavelength point of view we have 1310 nm and 1550 nm for single mode and used for long distance meanwhile for short distance we have 850 nm for multimode
14- from the capacity point of view there are SFPs supporting from 100 mbps to more than 400 / 800 gbps ( read about : CFP8 & QSFP DD )
15- SFPs distance Classifications :
A- SR : short reach
B- LR : Long reach
C- ZR : Extended Long reach
