Let’s have simple Idea about the “multimode fiber optic cables”
OM1, OM2, OM3, and OM4 are all multimode fiber optic cable designations that indicate the level of performance for each type of cable:
OM1
The oldest type of multimode fiber, OM1 is made of standard 62.5 micron glass and can support data rates up to 1 Gbps over distances of up to 300 meters. It has a large core diameter and numerical aperture, which gives it strong light-gathering ability and anti-bending characteristics.
OM2
Made of standard 50 micron glass, OM2 has a relatively small core diameter and numerical aperture, which reduces modal dispersion and increases bandwidth. The industry standard color for OM2 is gray, but some early cables are orange.
OM3
Made of enhanced 50 micron glass, OM3 is optimized for laser diode (LD) transmission and can support data rates up to 10 Gbps over distances of up to 300 meters. OM3 is backwards compatible with OM2. OM3 cables have a flame-retardant outer skin to prevent the spread of flames and the emission of smoke, acid gas, and poisonous gas.
OM4
Also made of enhanced 50 micron glass, OM4 is optimized for VSCEL laser transmission and can support data rates up to 40 Gbps over distances of up to 550 meters. OM4 is backwards compatible with OM3 and OM2. OM4 cables have the same distinctive aqua jacket as OM3 cables.
When choosing between OM1, OM2, OM3, and OM4, you can consider the following factors:
Network requirements: If your project is for shorter runs, OM3 might be a better, more cost-effective option.
Future scalability: If you need higher bandwidth in the future, OM4 is a safer bet.
Budget: If money is tight, OM3 will get you a better bang for your buck.
