What are they and how do they compare?
GPON stands for Gigabit Passive Optical Network. It is a type of fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) technology that uses optical fibre cables to deliver internet services to end users. GPON uses a single fibre cable that is split into multiple strands by passive optical splitters. Each strand can connect up to 32 or 64 users, depending on the configuration. GPON uses different wavelengths of light to transmit data in both directions: downstream (from the network to the user) and upstream (from the user to the network). GPON can provide up to 2.5 Gbps of downstream bandwidth and 1.25 Gbps of upstream bandwidth per fibre strand.
Gigabit Ethernet is another type of fibre-to-the-home technology that uses optical fibre cables to deliver internet services to end users. Gigabit Ethernet uses a dedicated fibre cable for each user, without any splitters. Gigabit Ethernet uses the same wavelength of light to transmit data in both directions, using a technique called wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). Gigabit Ethernet can provide up to 1 Gbps of downstream and upstream bandwidth.
Both have their advantages and disadvantages:

enhance the performance and reliability of the connection. - Gigabit Ethernet can provide symmetrical downstream and upstream bandwidth, which can
support high-speed uploading. - Gigabit Ethernet can offer more privacy and security, as the data transmitted over the dedicated
fibre cable is less vulnerable.
Gigabit Ethernet Cons:
- Gigabit Ethernet can require more fibre cables and active devices, such as switches and routers,
which can increase installation and maintenance costs. - Gigabit Ethernet can provide lower downstream bandwidth than GPON, which can affect the
quality of video streaming and downloading services. - Gigabit Ethernet can be less flexible and scalable than GPON, as it requires more infrastructure
changes to add or remove users or services.
