SMALL_FORM_FACTOR_PLUGGABLES.
Small form-factor pluggables, often referred to as SFP, SFP+ (enhanced version), or SFP28, are #compact & #hot_pluggable #transceiver modules used in networking to transmit & receive data.
ADVANTAGES:
These modules support various communication protocols like Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and others. They come in various types, supporting different data rates and can be easily interchanged to accommodate different network needs, offering flexibility and scalability in networking equipment such as switches, routers, and network interface cards.
The main advantage of using SFPs compared to fixed interfaces (e.g. modular connectors in Ethernet switches) is that individual ports can be equipped different types of transceiver as required.
SFP also are used to convert electrical signals into optical signals & vice versa giving ability to transmit data over longer distances without signal degradation. They are easy to replace, scalable and cost effective.
CLASSIFICATION:
SFP modules are available in various #types based on their supported #DISTANCE and #SPEED.
Port interface wise it can be Fiber SFP or Copper SFP.
Here are some of the common types of Fiber SFP modules based on #DISTANCE and #SPEED.
SX (Short Wavelength):
SX SFP modules are used for short-range connectivity over multi-mode fiber (MMF) cabling.
Cover Distance : Upto 550 Meters
Speed Support: 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps.
LX (Long Wavelength):
LX SFP modules are used for longer-range connectivity over single-mode fiber (SMF) cabling.
Cover Distance :10-20 Km
Speed Support : 1 Gbps, 10 Gbps, or even 100 Mbps.
EX (Extended Wavelength):
EX SFP modules are used for extended range connectivity over single-mode fiber (SMF) cabling.
Cover Distance : Upto 40 Km or 80 Km
Speed Support: 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps.
ZX (Zero Dispersion Wavelength):
ZX SFP modules are used for long-range connectivity over single-mode fiber (SMF) cabling.
Cover Distance : Upto 70 Km or 100-120 Km
Speed Support: 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps.
BX (Bidirectional Wavelength):
BX SFP modules are used for bi-directional connectivity over a single strand of single-mode fiber (SMF) cabling.
Cover Distance : Upto 10 Km or 20 Km.
Speed Support: 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps.
#QSFP (Quad Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable) supports higher data rate. QSFP/QSFP+ upto 40 Gbps and QSFP28 Upto 100 Gbps.
#Copper SFP: Copper SFP modules, also known as 10/100/1000BASE-T SFP, are used for Ethernet connectivity over copper cabling and usually utilized for short-range communication, commonly within DC or local area networks (LANs).
They typically support distances of up to 100 meters and operate at speeds of up to 10/100/1000 Mbps. They support Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and other communication protocols, enabling connectivity over twisted pair cabling (like Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat7) to transfer data at various speeds, typically up to 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps, depending on the module type.
