CABLE TYPES

In data centers, various types of network cables are used to interconnect the devices.

COPPER / ETHERNET CABLES :

Are used to carry digital Data via #electrical signals & are various types.

Cat5e (Category 5e) :

Suitable for Gigabit Ethernet & offers a bandwidth of 1000 Mbps over short distances.

Cat6 (Category 6) :

Supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet with a bandwidth of 10 Gbps over shorter distances.

Cat6a (Category 6a) :

Enhanced version of Cat6, capable of 10 Gbps over longer distances with better shielding.

Cat7 (Category 7) :

Provides even higher shielding, allowing for 10 Gbps or 40 Gbps Ethernet over short distances.

DAC (Direct Attach Cable) is a type of high-speed, low-latency data cable used in DC & networking environments.

FIBER Optic Cables :

Fiber optic cables carry digital data signals in the form of #light pulses and have two basic types signal wise.

a) Single Mode Fiber :

Fiber optic cables carry digital data signals in the form of #light pulses and have two basic types signal wise.

b) Multi Mode Fiber :

Suited for shorter distances, it has a larger core & is often used for connections within a DC or between nearby facilities.

Coaxial Cables : Coaxial cables are used for specific applications, such as cable TV distribution, connecting security cameras, or specialized data transmission.

Twinaxial Cables (Twinax) : Used for very short-distance, high-speed connections within racks or between adjacent equipment.

InfiniBand Cables : Ideal for high-performance computing clusters, supercomputers, & storage area networks (SANs) where low latency & high bandwidth are critical.

Console Cables : Typically used for configuring & managing networking equipment through console ports. They come with different connectors, such as DB9, RJ45, or USB.

Serial Cables : Used for connecting devices with serial interfaces, including some networking equipment & legacy systems.

USB Cables : Used for connecting various devices within a DC, such as peripherals or for management purposes.

HDMI / DVI Cables : These digital video cables may be used for connecting servers or other equipment that require video output in DC with KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) systems.

SFP / SFP+Cables : These direct-attach cables are used for connecting networking equipment, such as switches and routers, to servers or storage devices. They often come in various lengths.

QSFP / QSFP+Cables : Designed for high-speed data transmission, these cables connect high-density ports on network switches and routers.

MTP / MPO Cables : Used for high-density fiber optic connections, such as in DC backbone links and high-speed networks.

MTP/MPO connectors allow multiple fibers to be connected simultaneously.

Choosing the right cable type in a DC depends on factors like the required bandwidth, distance, & specific application needs, as well as compatibility with the existing infrastructure.
